I purchased a 5g tank with three way water filter (Wisper 2-5 model). On a Thursday I set up the tank and let it run until mid day saturday. On saturday I put 2 Danios in there and by Sunday Morning one was dead. When I went to the pet store to return the dead fish they gave me good bacteria to put in the tank. But by Wendsday (last night) the second fish was dead. What can I do to keep a fish from dying? Please help me. Thank you. IP: Logged |

I USED A TAP WATER TREATMENT, TO DECHLORINATE THE WATER, AND A BACTERIA ADDITIVE IN A LITTLE YELLOW CONTAINER. IT WAS IN BRAN? I CAN'T THINK OF THE NAME OF IT. IT'S AT HOME (I'M AT WORK.) THE WATTER WAS ROOM TEMP APROX 72 DEG. I FLOATED THE BAG ONTOP FOR 25 MIN JUST LIKE THE STORE SAID TO. LIKE I SAID ONE FISH LASTED FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID WRONG. IP: Logged |

Tanks do not cycle in 3 days. It takes time for the bacteria to establish a balance and in a 5 gallon tank ammonia and nitrite can hit toxic levels quite quickly. What you'll probably have to do is water changes to keep the ammonia from reaching lethal levels and keep track of it with an ammonia and nitrite test kit. There is lots of info. on the nitrogen cycle, check out the info page on this site. If you can get gravel from the healthy tank of a friend, this would definitely help. IP: Logged |
