Hi, I'm very interested in crawyfish, but I'm not sure if I should put one in my tank. I've been told that you can't put them with any kind of tropical species of fish because of the possibilities of the crawfish spreading a disease to them. Wouldn't the disease pass on to any kind of fish though??? Any way, I can't get a crawfish now because my current tank is too small(10 gal), but I'm planing on getting a 40 gal soon. Is what I've been told true? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do not recommend a crayfish. I thought they would be pretty cool but they will tear up real plants, uproot fake plants, and eat your fish. I lost a bunch of corys and plecos to the crayfish. Only get a crayfish if that is going to be the only animal in the tank or your other fish are at least as big as he is.

I currently have 2 crayfish in a 5 gal desktop tank with two juvenile platys and a mosquitofish. Tank is two months old. The crays are refugees from other tanks where they caused problems mentioned before (uprooted plants. attacked fish). I have plastic plants buried deep (3 inches of gravel) and they remain unmolested. Each cray has (and needs) a retreat to hid in. I recycled a cylindrical plastic chip container to build my retreats but a piece of PVC or even a coffee cup turned on it side will do.
They are neat critters to have. I love to watch mine. You just cannot keep them with bottom dwellers (plecs and corys) or any fish that sleeps on the bottom of the tank. They should be OK with mid and top dwellers that can swim fast enough to elude their clutches.

Your tank will need to be escape-proof as well. They can and will crawl out and away, only to dehydrate, die, and stink up your office!

I hear they're mighty tasty, too!!

I have a crayfish as well. In a 10gal. Someone told me that they won't get to be more than 4'' long. Right now he is about 2.5''. I have him with 1 blue gouramis and 2 kissing gouramis that I getting a 55gal for soon. The cray fish has never bothered the crayfish but he tries to get the kissers which are twice as big. However, all his attempts have failed because the kissers are much larger then him and they just fling him off. Don't put anything smaller then 4'' or unactive fish in with a crayfish. They will eat them. As for disease I haven't had a problem with that. He does I great job of keeping my gravel sparkling clean and he is very active. I all 11 plastic plants in that tank along with decorations and he doesn't bother any of those. He uses them to climb on and jump from one to the next. It's very funny to watch. I wish I could get one for each of my tanks, but they are hard to find. Mine came in my mistake with petsmarts feeder fish. They were selling them for the price of the feeders .12
