What a great website!
I am looking to get a pirana tank and I would like some thoughts from some experienced owners before I jump in. I have a 29 gallon tank all set to go. I have had another 29 gallon tank going for 2 years now with gouramis and tiger barbs with no deaths in the last 1.5 years (knock on wood). How often do piranas eat? How much does their food cost monthly? How many can I keep in a 29 gallon tank? Can I be gone for a couple days without them eating each other? Do they want hiding places or do they prefer open swimming areas? Do you recommend them as a pet or are they more work than you bargained for. I am a science teacher and my students would think this is pretty cool but I want to know what I am in for. Thanks!

I have 1 red belly in a 66 gallon tank, I had him in a 29 gallon for a year, but he out grew that. I normally put 1 goldfish in the tank daily, it costs me 8$canadian for 50 goldfish. My guy rarely comes out when anyone is near that tank, which has lend me to believe he comes out at night. They are really hardy fish, hardly any work, except if you give them to many goldfish, because then they just rip them up and it makes a huge mess. They don't eat in front of people very often unless they are very hungry as well.. all in all they are a very boring fish, the hide all the time, they arn't what you would expect. Don't get me wrong I do like my guy, but if you are looking for a fish that moves a little more think about JD's.

Hello i think pirahas would be good for your class room but you will need a bigger tank for them and they like some place to hide and they are eazy to scare and the over feeding there will be alot to clean up after they are do. Here is a idea for you and your class for the tank size you got get a oscar just on because they get big to and will eat guppys and feeder goldfish to i think that albinos are really cool looking to and the internet is covered with information about them

good luck

Hi bwknox, While the kids would love seeing real live Piranhas, you might want to consider the liability issues. If you do decide to get Piranhas I would suggest the Red Belly variety. They are slightly more timid and the kids would probably not get bitten unless they were cornered in the tank.

well idont know how old your students are but alot of people next to the tank or even fast movements will scare the pirahnas fairly easy if your students all gather around the tank and everybody is in a frency they will get stressed out and will want to hide and won't wanna eat or do anything give them something to hide behind and make sure you dont put sharp rocks in the tank because when they freak out they will bump into every thing in their path very hard.Unless you figuer out a way to put the tank above everybody but anyway you should only put 2 to 4 pirahnas in that tank and be prepared to get a bigger tank in 2to 3 months(ideal size is 65 gallon) after you get the little guys (one inch juvenile) their growth will depend on how much you feed them(there is no such thing as over feeding juveniles) feed them everyday till their little bellys bulge it is good to try and feed them at the same time every day you could feed them frozen bloodworms (very messy) or you could give them small feeders (dont worry if feeders are bigger than pirahna they will gang up on him) and oh yeah as long as you feed them well on friday they shouldnt eat each other over the weekend. water should be 78 degrees ferenheit dont put too much gravel in the tank because it will be harder to clean tank properly without taking too much water out never take out more than 45% of the water out when cleaning good luck!! i hope i helped you decide
