I have a mild case of ick in my 45g tank. My rainbow bosemani and 2 ID's have it. I treated the tank last night, but this am is wasn't any better. My 2 flaming darwf gourami's and pleco seem fine so I moved the boseamni and ID's into a spare tank I have. I don't know what to do next I don't want the gourami's or pleco to get it either. The 45g tank has been treated once and the spare tank has been treated twice. What should I do now? Do I just need to wait and hope it goes away? I was reading some things are ICK. Should I increase the temp in both tanks to 80. They are at 72ish right now. [This message has been edited by HCL113083 (edited 01-25-2004).] IP: Logged |

I got Maracide now and I previously was using ICK Clear (only thing I had at home to get ASAP). The ingredients in the ICK Clear are victoria green and acriflavine. The ingedients in the Maracide are Malachite green and chitosan. Is there any problem using these meds together. I put the ICK clear in today should I wait 3 days to use Maracide or can I add that tomorrow? Sorry about all the questions just never had ICK on anything but a goldfish so needless to say I am more attached to these little guys. IP: Logged |

Hi HCL113083, With Ick it is best not to move the fish to another tank since Ick is a condition of the water and not just the fish. When I suggest a switch from one medication to another it is generally because they are designed to work together such as Maracyn, Maracyn 2 and Maracide. Or you have run a full course with one medication without any noticeable change. In those cases water changes must preceed the medication change to remove the previous medication. Also when doing those water changes I recommend the use of a PH buffer since this will result in high PH changes. Normally with any Ick medications including Maracide it takes about 3 days to notice any physical changes and a full 5 days to kill out the infestation. In this case Ick Clear is not a medication that is designed to work with the Maracide and would not recommend changing until you have run a full course with the Ick Clear. If at that time the condition has not cleared up I would only recommend the change if you have done the water changes as described above. IP: Logged |

Thanks. So far everyone is looking good! I have done the course of the ICK Clear and it seems to have worked. I will do a water change and add the Maracide just to be safe. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Hi HCL113083, If the Ick Clear appears to have worked DO NOT switch medications. Do a couple of water changes over the next 3 to 4 days and then treat with the Ick Clear again if you still feel uncomfortable. By changing medications at this point you will put them through undue stress and cause more harm than good. Remember, when you do your water changes make sure the water added into the tank is within + or - 2 degrees of the tank water. Rapid temperature changes can also cause Ick. IP: Logged |

Be sure to remove the carbon element from your filter during treatment or the carbon will absorb the medication and your fish won't get any better. Be patient. A stubborn case of ick can take up to two weeks to treat due to the life cycle of the parasite. Do the treatment in-situ. You have to treat the whole tank, not just the fish. Ick is oftentimes the symptom of an overcrowded or poorly maintained tank stressing the fish. Check your stocking level and perform regular water changes. good luck IP: Logged |
