I fell in love with some brackish fish at the LFS and am planning on setting up a brackish tank (so I can take them home!). How much salt needs to be added to water before it is considered brackish? I can't seem to find any instructoins and my LFS doesn't know (he's kepping them in FW instead). I was also wondering if the salt level will interfer with the establishment of my Nitrobacter and Nitromonas colonies when I set up the tank? IP: Logged |

There is a bit of variation in the term brackish water. The best thing to do is research the fish and find out what specific density it requires. The is the density of the water relative to pure H2O (salt water is heavier). There are tables available to calculate the amount of salt per gallon to raise it a certain amount - but I can't remember what the value/gallon/decimal value is offhand. If I come across it again I'll post it here. I would also recommend a specific density gauge. The are two kind - one that just floats in the water and has thermometer like markings that you read at the water level and ones with a little pointer on a scale. If you add it to an already established FW tank it might interfere with the bacteria a bit, but colonies adapted to the conditions will grow. IP: Logged |
