Ok what do you do when you add the new fish to your tank? Do you add anything to the water? I have this parasite medicine that says everytime you add a new fish use this. So wondering if anyone does this and what you do to cause less stress? I just added two swordtails and they seem to be hiding and not swimming too much....what am I doing wrong?

I never add medicine with my fish. I sometimes add a stress reducer or aquarium salt because these help the fish relax. I am also careful not to pour the water the fish came in into the aquarium to help minimize the chances of diseases. The majority of my fish do just fine this way without any medicine. Figure by the time the fish make it to your house they have already been medicated at least twice and I would be careful of over medicating an unsick fish. However I know people who medicate every time they put something new in a tank and their fish are a-ok as well. If you decide to medicate just be careful not to use too much. Good luck.

Hi moeell, I rarely use any type medication when acclimating new fish into a tank. I do use Novaqua to buffer the PH when adding new fish. Either way, if you are going to add a PH buffer or any medications, they should be added to the tank and circulated BEFORE adding the new fish. If you add it right after they are acclimated then you are acclimating them twice and is harder on the fish than doing nothing at all.
