Hello all, I am new to this whole ownership of an actual aquarium. My friend bought me a 10 gallon tank for christmas and I am just getting around to setting up.I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what kind of fish i should get and how many can live sucessfully in a 10gal and as I have looked around at some of the topics on this board, I am wondering how necessary a heater is,is i should get live plants or fake,if test kits are necessary etc etc.I have two guppies I am planning on putting in it and as of now they are just in a little bowl.Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

the rule usually is about 1 inch of fish for every gallon. If ur getting tropical u need a heater and get some plants and a filter. But make sure they have places to hide and plenty of swimming space.

I would add an ottocinclus or 2 to keep algae down. If you are brand new, you may want to start with fake plants as real plants require a bit more work and preparation. As well, fake plants are less expensive than real ones (at least where I live). If you plan on breeding them, you could pick up java moss for the fry - it's fairly hardy and can do OK in a variety of water/light conditions. Eventually though, I would get real plants - they're a very interesting part of the hobby and a nice addition to the tank.

I would probably wait until you actually have a bit of algae and then get 2 to start. If they can't keep it under control you can get another to help out, but 2 should be good. My first set of Otto's had trouble acclimating and I lost 2 of 4. My 2 replacements haven't had any trouble at all though.

If you want to get them right away, or they keep the tank spotless, you can feed them algae wafers to make sure they get enough to eat.

Also, I've heard that it's better to have at least 2 females/1 male otherwise the lone female may be chased to death. I've never kept/bred guppies but they're sold in breeding trios. They're other guppy breeders on this site so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
