i would recomend atleast a 55gal for just one oscar. your oscar will quickly outgrow the 10 gal about 3 months. IP: Logged |

I would suggest at least a 55 gallon for a single oscar. As oscars grow really big. Also cichlid pellets are a good food they will eat flake food to. As they grow bigger you might want to try blood worms, krill, and even feederfish. Have fun with it they are very personable. IP: Logged |

Joey Dirt, Its really bad that you are keeping a great fish like an Oscar in a 10G tank, Other Oscar lovers please do not do this. These lovely gaints need a lot of water to live peace fully. I recommend at least ( 12" max length for an oscar X 2.5g )= 30G as a min for an oscar IP: Logged |

Hi Duster2003, Did someone give you the fish as a present or the tank? You may want to try and take it back unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money on it. They are enjoyable fish though. Pet stores should advertise gift certificates so people can give those instead of the pet itself. IP: Logged |

the oscar should do fine in the 10 gallon for a little while but NO you CANNOT prevent it from growing bigger. thats natural and thers nothing to stop it. they eat pellets that are for oscars, feeder fish, blood worms and earthworms, you could try crickets and bits of meat. but you will need another tank at least a 35 gallon at the least. anybody who leaves theyre oscar live in a 10 gallon tank all its life is cruel! look around at garage sales or in the paper cause bran new tanks are really expensive but new or old they all work the same. good luck IP: Logged |

A full grown oscar will require at least a 55gal tank for ONE fish. A too small tank will be more toxic and and can stunt/deform your fish and dramatically shorten it's life. An Oscar can live up tp 10 years and grow up to 12" in the right environment. It will consume a lot of food and produce a lot of waste. Bigger is always better when it comes to housing oscars. A quick question: Did you want an O as a gift or was it a surprise? Pets should never be given as a surprise gift. Animal shelters all across the country are filled with unwanted pets that were given as "gifts." An oscar is on the same level as a dog or cat when it comes to committment on the part of the owner. A gift that becomes an unwanted burden should never be made. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! IP: Logged |
