Hi everyone, I was just woundering if having driftwood in an aquarium is a good idea. I've had bad luck with it, it's turned my water brown(even after soaking it for a month). Is there another way to cure the wood and will it decae in the water over time? Thanx for the help!

Hey Alen,
I have had driftwood in my aquarium for several months now and it is fine. I boiled my driftwood twice and let it sit for 24 hours (to cool down) and I havent had any problem. It has not begun to decay and I find the bottom feeders and catfish (red-tailed sharks) really like it. I have heard that some fish need to have a peice to do well.
Did you try boiling yours as opposed to soaking it?

I bought a piece of drift wood from the pet store and just rinsed it under water and put it in my tank....thats was 3 weeks ago. I have not had any discoloration so the tannin process must already be done on some store bought wood. Try store bought wood...it worked for me. Plecos need it to stay healthy and cory cats love it too! Good luck! It can lower your pH I believe so watch that.
