I have a 20 gallon frestwater community tank. I have 2 albino corys a spotted cory, 2 zebra danios, an adult snail and some baby snails because the adult snail laid eggs. The temperature stays at about 72-78 degrees. I added a fantail goldfish the other day. I have had her in a separate tank for just over a year now. I noticed that her scales seemed to be very swollen, but a few days later the scales looked like they were back to normal. The next day, I noticed that some of her scales were falling off!! The scales have now stopped falling off but last night, I saw her and she had two big bubbles on her side. They are about 1/4 inch in diameter. They almost look like blisters. I tested the water and it has slightly high ammonia, nitrate and Ph. How should I make them go back to normal?? I was also wondering if anyone knew what is wrong with my goldfish and how I can cure her. I went to the pet store and asked them what they thought, and they recommended some medication. I am not sure if it is working because I just started using it. Thank you for reading my post, sorry that it is so long!!

Okay First Problem. Goldfish are not compatabile with cories and danios. Goldfish require a cold water environment, whereas cories and danios require a tropical environment (temp. 72-28 degrees).
Problem Two. Your Goldfish seems to have either Dropsy or Fish Tubercliosis. More likely Fish TB. The outlook for it is Extremely poor, i would suggest you put her down. She is really too ill and suffering.
This illness was mostlikely brought about by high ammonia or Poor water quality. You said she was kept in a bowl, this isn't a proper housing for a goldfish at all. Goldfish grow too big and are massive waste producers. The most suitable fish for a bowl environment is the Betta, which in my opinion is much lovlier than a goldfish.
To lower Nitrate you change water.
Third Problem. High Ammonia. This indicates that a 'cycle' has re started or begun cycling. This suggests either overfeeding and thus too much waste or dead fish. To lower readings you should change water, add a neutraliser and restart the cycle (read about it at www.aquahobby.net).
Why do you need to change the ph? It is best not played with, when fish are in the tank atleast. what is the problem with it?

If you wish fish for your 20 gallon tank i would suggest you add more danios (so you have six) and chose a LIvebearer, like platys or guppys. They are fun to keep and hardy as well as easy to breed.

Good Luck. Email me at angelic_deity32@hotmail.com if you have any questions.
