My paradise gourami seems to go after other fish in the tank. Is this normal for this type of gourami? My others seem pretty relaxed. He tends to be a fin nipper but I never see damaged tail or fins on the other fish. Also, when I put in a new fish today, he went over to the new fish and suddenly got really bright with his coloration. He has these dots on the side of the head where his gills are and he fanned those out and the dots got really bright. WOW! He made quite a display.

Hi NTC, This is normal. From my experience the most aggressive Gourami is the Snakeskin, followed by the Paradise and third is Opaline.

OK, so then should I not add these fish? Will they cause stress to the others by being territorial and chasing the others around? Should I take my paradise fish back to the petstore and trade him in? that is a shame because that paradise fish and the snakeskin are beautiful.

Newton, You are always going to have some fish that are more aggressive than the others and there will always be one that dominates the tank. You just have to provide cover (hiding places) for the less aggressive fish to take shelter. If you have one that is unmerciful and just totally beats up the other fish then you would probably do best by trading him in, but otherwise just provide cover.
