I wonder if anyone can tell me what's going on with my Fantail who is about 6yrs old now. If you look directly at him from side on he appears normal but looking into the water from above he appears to have a whitish glow all over his body. I have set up a biorb recently, he was in it but I put him back into his old tank to learn how to feed on food pellets rather than flakes as the other fish was eating everything before he'd even notice there was food around. I wonder if the change has stressed him and caused him to lose his slime layer? I have done a partial water change and put Stress coat into the the water...should I just wait and see what happens or does this sound like an infection I need to treat? Thank you for any advice offered.

Hi Newstar04, Since he looks normal from the side and viewing from the top it appears as you describe a glow I suspect what your seeing from the top is light reflection in the water. I don't really think you have anything to worry about.

I don't mean to be rude but I think after 6 years I know what my fish normally looks like in the water! This condition has occurred in the last 24 hours and is certainly nothing to do with light reflection, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Hello Newstar04, Sorry I couldn't help you. White coloration like cottony patches or film generally indicate a fungus with the exception of distinct white dots which indicate a parasite called Ick. With a light shining on it I guess a fungus like Velvet could make it appear to glow. Sorry.

Hi Kc5gvn, thank you for replying again, I am concerned that it may be a type of fungus he is suffering from...is there anything I can do if it is Velvet? I read on a website yesterday that it is very deadly. The whitish discolouration remains all over the fish but it's very hard to describe its exact appearance. My fish appears more lively today but I have noticed a few blood streaks on his tail and also on several of his scales. I have a general finrot aquarium treatment which has always worked in the past for the blood in the fins so I have added that to his water. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hi Newstar04, The fungus + blood streaks (Septicemia) indicates bacterial problems. Removal of debris from the gravel is essential. I really don't think the finrot medication is going to be strong enough in this case. Nor would Marcyn which I generally prefer. Probably the medication of choice is going to be Tetracycline. Tetracycline is a very strong med and can have some very strong complications. What I'm going to recommend you may want to get a second opinion from your local pet shop who can actually see the fish and how severe the symptoms are. I won't be insulted if you do.

Day 1 - First do a 20-25% water change, cleaning the gravel as you do the change. This will also help remove some of the finrot medication. We don't want to overmedicate. Use a PH buffer (I prefer Novaqua), enough to treat the whole tank. Treat the tank with Tetracycline at the recommended dosage on the package for your tank.
Day 2 - Do a 20-25% water change. If you got the gravel pretty clean on day 1 don't worry about getting the gravel clean. The main purpose for water changes the next few days is to keep the meds from building up. Use just enough PH buffer for the water that you are replacing. Treat with Tetracycline at the recommended dosage.
Day 3 - Repeat ALL procedures done on day 2.
Day 4 - Repeat ALL procedures done on day 2.
Day 5 - Repeat All procedures done on day 2.
Day 6 - Do NOT treat with Tetracycline. Change 50% of the water. Dose with PH buffer at the recommended dosage for a full tank.
Day 7 - Do NOT treat with Tetracycline. Change 20% of the water. Dose with PH buffer only enough for the water you are adding.
ADDITIONAL - I do NOT recommend increasing the water temperature with this medication. He will be under stress with difficulty processing oxygen. Increased temperature will decrease oxygen concentration. If at all possible try to increase airflow to the tank. Tetracycline is a very strong medication and becomes toxic when left in the tank. This is the reason for all of the water changes. Indications of it becoming toxic will be a foam on the top of the water. If you see a foam by day 3 or 4 you may want to do a 50% water change rather than the recommended 20 -25% water change.
Again, if you want to get a second opinion from your local pet shop I will definately not be insulted. Also you may want to print this out to show your local pet shop what was recommended.

Hi, just wanted to say thank you so much for all the information you have given me. First thing in the morning I'm heading down to my local 'World of Water' to buy the Tetracycline and begin the process you have detailed. Thanks for your time and the detail you have gone to.
