I have had sea monkeys several times in the past. They can be fun! My cousins also had them growing up. They are easy to care for and fun to watch. I had one batch live for over a year and a half! Those were really interesting, because they seemed in tune with the weather. A day or so before a big storm, they would start swimming in really tiny circles... In high school, I even took them with me to school in the bubble necklace the company sells! That was fun too IP: Logged |

Hi dreamer_girl, I don't know if you have figured it out yet, but sea monkeys are brine shrimp. To get them to live a little bit longer they need cooler water temperatures which you can do by floating ice cubes in the water. You can feed them brewer's yeast like you get at the grocery store, but just feed very little once a day. Even at that they will only live about a week from my experience. IP: Logged |

Ice is not needed, just don't put them in direct sunlight. If you got them from a kit or the company, they came with their own food. One scoop of food a week, I never used the large scoop (if you have the kit, you know what I'm talking of). The company who markets them also makes special nutrients... I used them all when I have mine live a year and a half. They even have a thing to get them to mate, not that they usually need help. Areate the water 1-2 times a week, clean the water when it gets nasty, and don't forget to feed them. Thats really the key to keep them alive. I hate to say it, but if they only live a week, you are doing something wrong... I never used ice cubes (probably too cold for a small tank, such as the ones the company makes) nor brewers yeast. One of the cool things is, if they all die, you can let the water evaporate completely then add new water and they will come back to life (suspended eggs will). The females can produce offspring without a male, and if a mate female dies babies may still be produced if the timing is right! They are just brine shrimp which many places sell as fish food, but they can be fun too. IP: Logged |

Not to put words in anybody's mouth but I think we're crossing lines about the life span. It is possible to keep colonies of brine shrimp going for longer than a week (into to years if done correctly, I knopw that the one we keep in lab has been going for over 2 years). However a specific brine shrimp itself doesn't live that long. So you might not want to pick one, name it, and make it your favorite. Not unless you are willing to name them all the same name IP: Logged |

yea i am not planning on naming them. they are just cool to watch.i don't have many left now but the ones that are alive are HUGE compared to birth/hatching size. ------------------ IP: Logged |
