I have a 40 gallon tank and I have five fish, all gouramis. The water in the tank smells kinda musty. Now before you say I don't take good care of my tank, I do a 25 percent water change every month and I also wipe out any algae that is growing. I also vacuum the tank as well. When I do the water changes I always put in water conditioner and stress zyme. The fish are all thriving too. The only thing I think it could be is the temperature. Could a higher temperature in the tank cause the musty odor? NTC IP: Logged |

I don't know why it has an odor. My aquarium smells too sometimes, and I clean it often. I used one of those airfresheners that you can just set on a table or flat surface, and I put it on the filter. It did help. I hope this helps you!! It is a H.O.T. Magnum filter and it has a biowheel. Also, the temp is between 76 and 78. NTC IP: Logged |

Hi Newton the Cat, Your changing 25% of the water once a month. The musty smell is ammonia. If you do a check on the water I believe you will find the ammonia to be a little high. If the temperature is above 80 degrees it will make it smell a little stronger. Try doing a 20% water change once a WEEK. I think you'll find the smell go away after a couple of weekly water changes. You'll also see the ammonia level go down. IP: Logged |

well they are fish and they crap and swim so it will eventually smell like fish water and kinda musty. try getting a lid for the tank and the smell shouldnt be as bad. IP: Logged |
