Hi!! I just put my fantail goldfish into my aquarium. I have had my goldfish (Dorothy) for just oner a year now, and I kept her in a bowl. Today I went to the pet store to ask a question about my snails that kep laying eggs, I have too many baby snails now, so she told me that a goldfish would eat the snail eggs. I put Dorothy in my aquarium about 10 minutes ago. She seems to like the extra room to swim, the tank is 20 gallons. My question was is it ok to keep her in this tank if the water temp. stays at about 76-80 degrees?? I was also wondering if I could feed her tropical fish food or should I feed her goldfish food too?? My other concern was that her scales on her look different, they look almost like there are tiny balloons attached to her side, does anyone know why this is or if this is something bad?? Thank you for your help!! Ashley IP: Logged |

Hi, does your gold fish has bubbles all over her. or just two bubbles? Dont worry about the food goldfish pretty much eat anything even there poop. I have my three goldfish in a bout 80 degree water and they havn't acted strange at all. If your fish has bubbles all over her then it would be a good idea to check the pet store for some medcine that helps there coat. I think it's calles "stress coat". IP: Logged |

Hi ahoycatfish, Even though Goldfish are coldwater fish they can survive at the temperatures specified. It does however increase their metabolism and shorten their lifespan. They can eat tropical fish food without any problem, but avoid brine shrimp or frozen brine shrimp. Brine shrimp will block them up. I'm a little confused about the "tiny balloons". Are these around the eyes? IP: Logged |

Thanks for replying to my question. My goldfish's scales on her side look kind of swollen. It's kind of hard to explain, I don't know if it has always been this way or not. I tried to take a picture but she keeps swimming away, as soon as I can get a picture, I will post it. How much does it shorten their lifespan??? Thanks Ashley IP: Logged |

Hi, Your last description sounds more familiar. It sounds more like the scales are protruding or flared out which most likely is dropsy, caused from bacteria. Since you just moved her into the new aquarium it is most likely caused from conditions in the bowl she was in. As far as how much the increased temperature will shorten their lifespan it is only an estimation base on the increased metabolism since it is impossible to know exactly how long she would have lived. General estimation is that it would be shortened about 20%. If she would have lived 10 years, which is a good average if maintained well, her life would be shortened to 8 years. IP: Logged |

HI ahoycatfish, No the warmer water wouldn't make her scales drop off amd it's not normal. In all fairness to Dorothy without seeing exactly what is going on with the scales I wouldn't want to give you the wrong advice. It is beginning to sound more like parasites under the scales but I would need to see her to be sure. My best suggestion at this point is to take her to your local fish store where they can actually see her and make an accurate diagnosis. Sorry I can't be any more help than that. IP: Logged |

Thank you for responding. I will take her to the pet store to see what is wrong. It does seem to be a little better, but there are still some scales dropping off. Thank you for your advice!!! Ashley IP: Logged |
