I have a ten inch oscar and he seems to lie around a lot. I am wondering if he is getting bored. And if he is what would be good stimulation?? He likes being hand fed and plays with the pleco in there sometimes. But there have been times when I will walk in the room and he is "playing dead". Literally floating on the top on his side. But as soon as I walk near the tank he acts like my dog, rolls over and is ready for action. I think this is abnormal. Any advice??? IP: Logged |

My goldfish does the same thing!! She will sit on the bottom until I come by and feed her... I don't know why she does this. How big is your tank?? Is there enough room for him to swim around a lot?? IP: Logged |

Yes, he has more than enough room. 65 gal. I had some fake plants in there but he did some "gardening" and pulled them. He is a weird one.. I rescued him in October and he was in bad shape from an encounter with a dominant fish. He was missing his fins on both sides barely had a tail fin, and had a large chunk taken off the physical part of his tail(not the fin part). He is now spoiled, eating a diet of feeders, dog food, and shrimp. Man does he love food. I just try to alternate what he gets for stimulation. I have known some goldfish to just lie around. But I think "Happy" as he's called, gets a kick out of making me think he's dead. Maybe he's watched Finding Nemo to many times with my kids. LOL IP: Logged |

Hi RottieZeus, That would generally be considered abnormal behavior, but with an Oscar, ...who knows? Oscars definately have their own personality. Maybe he's trying to catch a few rays and get a tan from the flourescent hood. If all of your water parameters are Ok and he doesn't show any other signs that something is wrong I wouldn't be too concerned. IP: Logged |

i wouldnt suggest feeding him a diet of feeders. they create all sourts of diseases. for stimulation try putting a ping pong ball in or i put a fishing bobber in. or if you take a string and let him chase it around is fun. mabe get a ball that sinks for him to roll around. expiriment with things. I actually know of someone who taught their oscar to knock a ping pong ball out of the tank (they'd put the ball in, the oscar would knock it out. They'd put it in again, the oscar would knock it out, etc). Then there's oscars like mine who couldn't care less about the ping pong ball and are content to spit sand at the plecos. -Chelle IP: Logged |
