I'm getting an oscar soon but I havent decided what kind. I've never had one before, so I don't really know whats out there. I don't have any other fish so there are no compatibility issues. Does anyone have any suggestions?...Thanks

Albino, very beautiful fish the on i have (not sure if male or female) has lite orange tiger stripes and is a beautiful pink/white colour. as "she" gets bigger the more amazing the colours get.

Hi J*baby392, You have apparently decided on an Oscar. Pick out the one that appeals to you. Some people like the black and charcoal, some like he red coloration and some like Albinos. Some people don't care about color but pick out different Oscars for their personality. So the best option is to spend a little time watching the Oscars at your local pet shop and pick out the one that your drawn to. This will be the most satisfying to you and the best for the fish you purchase no matter what color he is. More than likely you will already have a name for him before you get him home.

Sometimes you can find an unusual oscar like mine. He is a salmon color with a grey silohette.

Ive had albino, black, and tiger, and they are all great. I do particularly like the tiger, as their colors get very vibrant when they are hunting live food. You can really tell their mood and sometimes health by their colorations.

o year some times you find weird ones I a saw a half albeeno half tiger it was white with red markings and a blackish-grey tail very cool

I have a passion of oscars, and i have been growing quite a few of them since 3 years i have a Red eyed veil tail Albino oscar. This one is really cool and great to look at.

yes, pick one that appeals to you and looks healthy. but dont get a blueberry or rasberry oscar, they are just albino oscars that have been died with colouring by needle injection or dye being put into the water. it is a very cruel thing to do and the fish will lose the colour after a while anyway. and they wont live very long and are prone to disease. dont support this cruelty.

Like other's have said, it all comes down to personal preference. And like Puff said, avoid any that are blue or any other odd color or are named after fruit. They are dyed which is a very cruel practice.

Here are the most common types of oscars and pics:

These are the most commmon varieties of oscars:

Tiger

Red

Lutino - Has a light base color (white/yellow/pale orange) and generally comes in 4 forms. One is commonly referred to as an albino (true albinos NO dark orange and VERY rare) and is available in the red or tiger colorations:
Lutino tiger
Lutino red
The other looks like the previous examples but has black on the fins. It also comes in red & tiger colorations:
Lutino tiger
Lutino red

Common/Wildtype (basically looks like a tiger oscar, but has very little orange)

Veiltailed/long finned(comes in all color variations)
