I just purchased 15 2 inch black piranha's and was wondering what exactly will be the perfect sized aquarium for these fish. I have 3 large red bellied piranha's in my 30 gallon tank but am curious to know what size tank for 15 little black piranha's. I have a 40 gallon in my garage but what would size would be fine for these little ones, they get pretty large from the research I read.

You may have problems with these fish as they can be aggressive towards one another. Lengths on most sites I've seen are 'wild' piranha (ie: 18-24") On the best site I've found http://www.angelfire.com/biz/piranha038/rhombeus.html the author states that the largest he's seen is 11 1/2" - so your looking at minimum 150 gallons. He gives an 18 month size of 3-5", which would mean probably minimum 55-75 gallon (their pretty fat bodied).

For 15 black P's you will need 15 100 gal tanks. It will not be long before you have 1 black P in your tank if you try to keep them together. They will not allow anything else in the tank with them not even there own kind. Some of them will take longer than others to be that aggressive but they will be that aggressive. Black P's are not like red belly P's the reds perfer to have tank mates. the blacks are loners. It does take a long time for the blacks to grow once they are about 3-4 inches they will only grow about 1 inch per year. So you have plenty of time to move up to the 100 gal tanks they will be fine in 40-55 gal tanks for several years.
