hi mightyone_5 What kind of tank do you want the filter for? Freshwater or saltwater? Do you want live plants in your aquarium? and what size aquarium/size fish do you have? I dont know alot about other filters but I can tell you about mine. I have a 55 gallon aquarium with various tropical (freshwater) fish. I have an aquaclear 500 filter that hangs over the side of the aquarium and needs a new charcoal bag once a month. It also needs to be cleaned once a month to ensure that it works properly. I find this does a great job in my tank. It keeps my tank clean well and is very quiet. The one drawback to this kind of filter is that if you have very small fish (i.e neon tetras) they may get sucked up through the tubing unless you have a peice of nylon covering the tubing. This is the best I could do!..Good luck- great hobby! IP: Logged |

I have a 75 gal and i used to have just a aquaclear 500 when it was a cumunity tank with lots of small fish. When i changed the tank to a non comunity tank with large fish i added another filter the Millenium 3000 its a good filter but rather noisey it has two air valves on it to increase air flow for better bacteria growth. to gether they move 600 gals per hour. for messy eaters and large fish it is best to lots of filtration, as far as i know you cant have too much filtration. As for the Discus i have read they are very sensitive and will not tolerate the usual tank pollutants that other tropicals will. Ammonia, a natural fish waste, will kill discus quickly. IP: Logged |
