my wife wants to get a couple of (male)bettas i don't want to make same mistake again. do you need to cycle the water in a betta tank? i'm looking to get two small tanks for them(10 to 15 gal) and also wondered what other fish would be ok with them.

Dear Mike,
you do not realy need to cycle your tank before placing a Betta in, because Bettas mainly are kept in bowls! Bettas can live in tanks/bowls smaller than one gallon and be happy. There is no need to purchase a large tank or filter system if you jsut want two male Bettas! Go to your local pet store, they should have some fun things to put your Betta in. They even have plastic cases that you can place a divider in and have one male on either side! If you deside to put your Bettas in tanks you can put other fish with them, unless you have a realy nasty fish! Just make sure you don't put fin nipping fish like the tiger barb in the tank with the Betta or your Bettas fins will be shredded to pieces!

Yeah, bettas are normally kept in one gallon bowls. They don't need teh whole filter system, it can actually rip their fins!

Now if you want other fish with your betta you should go to a petsmart or other pet store with people who know alot about fish and ask them what they think would be good with a betta. These are some of the fish that I know wouldn't be good with a betta-
angelfish, tetras, and black ghost knives. Some fish I know are good with bettas are livebarrers- mollies, platies, swordtails, endler's live barrers, guppies ,ect.

thank you for your reply. i bought a new tank and filled it half way (5 gal) with water out of my other tank then finished filling (4 gal) with fresh water. i then took filter medium from filter in old tank and put in filter on new tank. i was told this will make cycle easier on fish and that i might not even get a spike and if i do get spike it should be lower than normal.

i put 1 betta and 2 guppies in tank. i plan to put a few more guppies (2 or 3) in after i see how ammonia and nitrites do.

thanks again for replies and advice
mike

Hi mike57, If you have the same type gravel in both tanks you should try to add about 1 cup of gravel from the old tank to the new tank. This is where most of your bacteria builds up. This will help keep from having the spikes.

I had a beta a while ago, and I just kept him in a 1 gallon bowl. It would be a good idea to get a lid to keep him from jumping out. Just do not put them in the same tank, they will fight with eachother!!
