hey ppls
im having a spot of trouble with my neons.
i orginally had 10 and they got to about 2.5cm. They eventually died off 1 by 1. I thought they had just gotten old so i ignored it and bought some more. NOw they are dying off again. They seem ok until i see them the next day being nibbled on by some black bodied red fined sharks. Could i get some help?
my tank is a 5 foot tank with 200 litres if water. i keep 4 barbs, 1 gourami, 4 angelfish, a coupla swordtails, a few small 'sharks', 7 neons, 4 golden carp.
could i please get some help?
from 'mindless'
ps. i really am quite mindless

I would try to seperate the Sharks form the neons and see what happens. Just put the Sharks in a different tank for a couple of days (if you have an extra tank) and see what happens.

Have the tetras lost there color?? If they have, I think that they might have neon tetra disease. Here is a good site about it... http://www.planet-pets.com/newsarticles/neontetradisease.htm
p.s. I hope your fish get better!!!

When I asked about neon tetras at the good fish store, they said that it is normal for tetras to die off fast. They told me that I would have to keep buying several at a time until I had a decent sized school that survived. They said it had to do with how they don't do well during the shipping process and are sensitive to change. Don't know if this helps at all...
I'd be interested in neons if someone who has been successful with them told me what the secret was.

hi, I have a school of neon tetras and I dont think there is any real trick to keeping them. I had 10 to begin with and the filter was sucking them up one by one (aquaclear 500). I thought the "sharks" were eating them but it turned out to be the filter. I have since bought more after putting nylon on the filter and I have not had any difficulty with them since. I feed all my fish twice a day with either flakes, blood worms, tubifex worms or shrimp pellets. Maybe I just got a good batch of them.

ya seperating sharks and catfish is a good idea.. i had a pictus cat and it ate 5 neons in one night.. the damn thing.. keep them with smaller less agressive fish to insure a longer life. after removing the pictus i havent lost one yet.. its been a few months since then to.
