I have one cichlid that I bought about a week ago. He has injured (but not killed) two other cichlids since then. I had to take noth back to the pet store...

I want to have more than one fish... The guy at the pet store told me I have two options... one, bring back the 'mean' fish and try two new fish. or two, buy another agressive fish and they will be 'even' so they won't really hurt each other - just stay out of each other's way.

I like the fish I have - he's pretty, but I don't want to hurt anymore fish by hoping it's aggressive enough to 'even' out....

I was thinking that maybe I should get an agressive fish and, when i bring it home, put the other ('mean') fish out and rearrange the tank and add a new 'cave'. Then let the new fish back in first, so it can get semi-comfortable before I put the 'mean' one in. I was hoping this would make the environment seem 'new' to both fish so maybe my current one wouldn't feel as threatened....

Any ideas? Do you think my above idea will work, or should I just get two new fish?

Can't really say unless you know what kind of cichlid you have.
lots of caves, fake plants, rocks, are always a good idea in a cichlid tank. the more the better, in my opinion.

Unfortunatly I don't know what type of cichlid it is... The pet store (PetSmart) says it's just a 'misc' cichlid... I've searched on 7-10 different 'fish' websites that have pictures of TONS of different cichlids.... but none really look like mine... maybe mine's too young? He's a purpleish/blue and once he got 'comfy' in my tank he got brown stripes...

The first one he injured was a peacock cichlid... the second was another 'misc' cichlid... light yellow with brown stripes.

I can tell you that the 'mean' one is south african (though I don't know from which lake) and so is the yellow one that he recently hurt. The peacock one is north american.

Any ideas at all?

It sounds like you have one from lake malawi. It's hard to say which one without a pic. Maybe a cousin to the johonni. I had a johonni II that was realy mean but it had black stripes not brown. The johonni has several cousins but the johonni II is the only one that I have had personaly. My johonni II had to be isolated by himself in a 20 because he would kill everything even the plecos. Maybe you could get a digital and post a pic.

Jadedstorm, The jack dempsy is a new world cichlid.

Does your fish look like this one or do the stripes go the other way?

Cichlids are unpredictable fish one day they will be fine with others the next one of them will go off the deap end and kill 5 or 6. Trust me Ive had them for a long time and if your goin to have cichlids and expect to keep adding new or diff ones to the tank then you might as well prepare your self for losin some because you will more then once. It dont matter what you put in the tank with them you aint goin to stop them unless its a bigger and meaner one.

And tell the pet store they are full of poop. Every cichlid has a specific name.
