Black Knife or Black Ghost is a community type fish. They do best if you put a clear plastic tube in the tank for them to get into. Otherwise they will remain hidden in the plants or rocks. IP: Logged |

I wouldn't put fish the size of neon tetra's or smaller in you tank with a Black ghost knife(BGK). With a BGK you need a pretty big tank. I have mine in a 16 gal. But I really should have at least a 20 gal which I would recomennd for you 2.also don't put a red finned shark in with your BGK because they aren't community fish. I'm not sure if I understood you about the betta question but don't put a betta with a BGK. If you were thinking about getting a betta in stead of a betta I think that would be the way to go if you don't have alot of mony to spend. I don't think you should have this as a first fish either. BGKs eat alot too!!! IP: Logged |

I am curious the difference between the black knife and brown knife. I had a brown knife that the fish store swore was a good community fish. This thing attacked my fish while they slept and would eat parts of them. one or two a night. I fed this knife fish a cube of bloodworms all to itself, hand fed (which was cool), half in and out it's cave, every day. but that was not enough apparently! It was a bad scene. I lost some really spectacular rainbows to that knife fish. IP: Logged |

Hi dianenm, Black Knife, commonly called Black Ghost, are solid black with a yellow band around the tail. They are a community type fish that does well with Angels, Silver Dollars, Rainbows, Botias and fish of this type and size. They DO NOT do well with smaller fish that are fin nippers like Tiger Barbs. The African Knife, or Brown Knife, gets to be much larger and much more aggressive. They are much harder to place because they are too aggressive for community fish and fall prey much of the time to the larger fish that they would have to be kept with. IP: Logged |

Hi, Kc5gvn.. I was hoping you'd have my answer! I have seen the black ghost and they are very cool, but I've been too afraid to get one (old brownie was returned to the store long ago : P). What do the black ghost knife eat? would they do well in a tank with smaller fish, like cory cats and cherry barbs? I mostly have larger fish, like angels, pearl gourami, sae, clown loach, goby (how big do these freshwater gobies get anyway? I am hard pressed to find much info on them. I have the spotted goby, that eats algae as well as other stuff). but have aquired 5 baby cories from my dad's tank that I'd hate to get eaten! IP: Logged |

Black Ghosts do very well on frozen brine shrimp. With Cories there is no problem. You might have a small problem with the Cherry Barbs if they are prone to be fin nippers. This should be fairly easily overcome by placing a glass tube or a glass kerosene lantern top in the front of the aquarium for the Ghost to hide in. I'm sorry I can't give you very much info on the freshwater Gobies. I've never been really interested in them. The largest I've seen was an import shipment we got about 5 1/2", but I believe they can get up to 8" possibly larger. Sorry to say we lost the whole shipment in a couple of days. All of the tank parameters were good. All we could attribute it to was UFD. IP: Logged |

It depends if the beta is aggressive or not. I had one that was really agressive, and anoter that was pretty peaceful. But just don't put two male betas together!!! Ashley IP: Logged |
