Proud new parent of 4 baby ciclids. Was originally 5, but the 4 above probably eat the 5th one . I am trying to figure out who had the babies, so next time I can put it in a breeding tank so all babies can survive. Any tips on how I can figure that out.

This is the second time it had happened. I knew who the mother was that time because she was beaten nearly to dead trying to protect her babies. I believe it is the same mother that had these little one. Though this time she has already grown to be the biggest on in the tank, so no one mess with her this time .

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

what kind of cichlid do you have? some get fat stomachs on either side of their bodies when they are full of eggs. like my convict cichlid. this type of fish, the male also, will get real nasty with everyone, when she has babies. we have one with about 25 babies in a tank alone, that are almost half her size now (she's 1 inch or so) and she still will "race" with our finger back and forth across the tank. she also bites the heck out of me when I clean. cute little thing : )
others you don't know until you see their mouth pouch is full (mouthbrooding) like my africans, red zebra and hap nublis females.
I can never tell with my female angelfish physically. just by her attitude, if she's going to lay eggs soon.
good luck with the fry! they are such fun.
