I got my beta fish about a month and a half ago. He has been very perky and get excited to see me and makes my day. I'm a poor college kid and he lives on my desk. My boyfriend bought him for me. This morning he was perky and greeted me. But now (aout 4 in the afternoon, only 6 hours later). I noticed he is floating sideways and can't seem to correct it unless he is in constant motion. I change his water once a week, keep the temperature normal and use Betta Complete Water Conditioner. I usually feed him flakes twice a day, and he always seems eager to eat it and finishes it all very quickly. The only thing I can think of is that he got cold. My roommate and I opened the window a crack, as it was stuffy in here, but it is only about 30 degrees outside. I put his little tank on a stack of movies so it is closer to the light (the only way I can think to heat the water) and he seems to be doing a bit better. Will this work, or is there somethign else I should do? Please help !! IP: Logged |

hi there! as a fellow poor college kid and betta owner, i know exactly what you're talking about..mine do the same thing when the temp. fluctuates in my dorm room...once, however, mine turned out to have a parasitic infection. look at your betta with a flashlight and see if he has tiny rusty specks, like dust. if so he might have velvet. if so, try treating him with maracyn 2- it really helped mine!! also, see if his eyes start to look red- mine did that when he was sick. if he's not sick, then i would suggest getting a little stick-on thermometer for the side of his tank, and make sure it doesn't get below 60 degrees-if so, add warm water in very small doses to his tank. hope this helps!! I would also try to find a place out of the way of drafts etc. Temp. fluctuations can be very stressful for fish. Also, be careful using the light without a thermometer, you don't want to cook him! On the disease front, does he show any signs of swelling or discolouration? IP: Logged |

I would put him as far from the window as you can, or where ever it is warmest. IP: Logged |
