This morning when I went to feed my Betta, Stormy, he was floating on his side. He's never done that before, and I'm sure he wasn't sleeping. I thought he was dead. He's about 2 and a half years old. He kept floating and struggling to swim. However, about 3 hours later he's perfectly fine. I know they don't live very long, but do you have any suggestions? I feed him 3 betta pelets two times a day, and clean his betta-hex every week. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much.

Hmmm...I am not sure, I have 10 bettas right now, but they are only a few months old, the oldest I got in July/June something like that. I recently had a 2.5 yr. old betta die, so he may just be old. My fish died because his back got crushed and he had some fungus from the previous fish, which I didn't realize was fungus, I thought it was just growing on the other fish because he had been dead a few days (we had been on vacation!). I would guess he is just old. Are his fins kind've clamped though? That sounds like one of my friends fish, who has clamped fin. They kind've get a little ball on the end of their fins, and their fins won't flare. YOu can buy some medicene for that, if that is the case!

Thank you for replying. I do believe I know what the problem is now. I noticed that when he was floating his body had a slight S curve to it. I was told it has to do with the water, and I should use salts and clean his tank more often. Hopfully it will work. Its just funny that it never happened before. I'm going to buy him a new tank with a filter, see if that helps any. He seems very cheery and zippy this morning though. We'll see. Thank you.

I wouldn't use a filter. I have one with my betta in an aquarium, since it is a pain to clean it, and the other day I was looking at him in there, as he can be hard to see, and I noticed that his fins looked ripped and torn. They are almost half gone! Though the filter was on the lowest setting, I think that was the cause!

Did the tempature change?? It can cause stress to the fish if it changed too quickly.
