Hi, I am new to having fish, and have a 20 Gallon Tank that I got for my birthday. I am wondering what sort of fish are the best ones to get. I realize everyone has their favorites. I don't want Chiclits, but do want fish with some colour! I already have 2 Tetras. I like Mollies, but had one and it died. I've been reading up on different kinds of fish and it seems that they all like different water temps, what is a good all around temp for fish? Thanks!

hi,
I would suggest sword tails and yellow comet platys. They will add colour and they are really easy to maintain.

this is jsut my presonal preference, but i would say to look into gourami's. they look REALLY nice.

one thing tho. dont purchase a "painted glass fish" these may look nice in the beginning b/c of their neon color, but they are actually injected with the coloration and becasue of that are weak and mite die.

I agree with fisybiz, swordtails and platys also swim in all levels of the tank and help get rid of algae. A really good site that I just found out is fishprofiles.com it has lots of imformation about fish.

Thanks so much for all your help! I don't know much about fish, but I'm slowly learning...I think! So hard to know the different types and what gets along with what, etc.... It's exhausting!

78-80 degrees is good for most fish. I'm surprised your molly died. They are usually a very hardy fish. Try some colored tiger barbs there pretty cool.

I would get some cory catfish. They eat the extra food on the bottom of the tank and the albino ones are really bright colored. They are my favorite fish. I have 2 albino and 1 spotted cory catfish! Neon swardtails are also colorful!!

Hi Canadian_Mickey, For a 20 gallon they can't get too large. Probably Tetras or possibly a few Rainbows. I've gotten into the Rainbows lately. There are several varieties like Blue Neons, Turquois, Bosmani with the front half of the body blue and the back half orange to red or Australian Rainbows with a red stripe pattern. Rainbows get up to about 4 inches.

Keep in mind that you want a gallon of water for every inch of fish. The hardiest fish I have ever had are painted tetra, which come in many colors. Gourami'a are pretty and easy, as are fan tailed guppies. I have had good luck with bala sharks (though they are jumpers so need a covered tank). Neon tetras are hard, they are only happy with at least ten of them and they die off quickly. The fish I have are happiest between the temps of 72-78 degrees.
Pleccas are good bottom feeders, they can get too big for your tank eventually but are easy to trade in for smaller ones. Chinese algae eaters will attack other fish when they get too big...
I had a large tank with 4 african ciclids, and a year later I had the "winner". They were very pretty but beat each other up! My uncle used to breed them, each were kept separate except for certain conditions (I don't know what they were) But it was really cool when there were babies, because the babies would swim into the mothers mouth when scared...

Hi ghoti and very one else:

Just wondering, are the "painted" tetras the same breed as the black tetras? I am asking because the black tetra I have is nipping at the fins of my goldfish in my 10 gallon tank. I only have one black tetra, and have recently added an extra four "painted" tetras. Since you owned fan tailed guppies along with "painted" tetras, do you know whether these painted tetras are fin nippers also?

I am giving away some fishes soon and was wondering whether I should give the goldfish away or the five tetras. Those are the only fishes in my tank.

I am considering starting a community tank and am not sure whether I should keep the goldfish because I would like to add some zebra tetras and neon tetras to the tank and am not sure whether or not they are nippers or not.

All advice would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for all your help.

Best,

sukiisukii

Please don't buy "painted" tetras. They are glass tetras that have been injected with dye. It is a really horrible process. The fish end up weaker, more susceptible to illness, and live shorter lives. Plus, assuming they live for more than a couple months, the dye will fade.

Go here for more info on dyed fish: http://www.deathbydyeing.org/

Hi Chelle:

Yea, I actually found out that these "Painted" tetras are actually artificially injected with coloring after I bought them yesterday. I am going to try to bring them back into the store tomorrow to try to exchange them for black mollys instead.

Hopefully everything will workout according to plan assuming the Petland will let me exchange the fishes.

I would start with a pleaco and a red tailed shark and a balloon mally this will get really good color in your tank and you can have a very peacful community tank.
