i am thinking about building my own tank and maybe even stand. i would want the tank to be at least 50 gallons, be long rather then tall, and any type of wood would b fine for the stand. the question is that i was wondering how hard it would be to build this with my father and also how much money would you think this would cost? would i be better off buying a tank and stand instead? this tank would be for my cichlids if thats helps at all. thanx

Hi grnlemonade, It is generally less expensive to buy manufactured tanks. On the other hand the stands are less expensive to build yourself. There are some factors you have to consider. If you build your own tank consult with a glass company and preferrably with someone there who has custm built aquariums before. They can advise you as to how thick the glass must be for your given dimensions, because of the pressure exerted on the glass (pounds per square inch). In building a stand you want to use a soft wood like pine. Hardwoods like oak will warp when they get wet creating a gap between the tank and the wood. This creates an uneven pressure on the base of the tank and will eventually cause the glass to crack.
