I just established a 70 gallon tank about a month ago. I took it slow and put some small fish in to dirty up the tank. I have recently put 3 larger fish in. Which include 2 pictus cats and a needlenose. The cats are about 5 inches in lenght. One of them I noticed has some small white dots on it in a moderate amount. The dots appear somewhat bumpy, just barely sticking up. His eyes seem ok. He seems to be swimming ok and eating just fine. None of the other fish appear to have any problems. Is it a normal skin condition for this catfish or could it be ick? I appreciate any feedback.

Thanks, Matt

do the bumps look like tiny grains of salt on your fish? if so, then i think you mtie have ich. dont worry tho, this disease is easily curable and is not harmful if treated soon enough. the medication is only a few bucks too.

Yes they are about the size of a grain of salt and they are bumpy on his skin. I think he came from the pet store like this, because I noticed it like 1 day later. Will the medication hurt the fish? I've heard some can be sensitive to it.

follow the directions on the bottle for scaleless fish and the fish should be fine.

Hi rinkrat33, Sounds like ick. I've found Maracide to be a very effective treatment. What grnlemonade was referring to by scaleless fish is smooth skinned fish like catfish and eels. With smooth skinned fish you don't want to use anything with Analine Green in it. Analine Green is a dye which will clog the poures of smooth skinned fish.
