our beta ffish is really round in the middle within the last few months actually. No lack of energy on his part(we do not know if it is male or female and how do we tell?)
He looks like he has been hitting the carbs a bit hard, it ok for him to be so round, I feel like we need to take him for a walk to shed some poundage. Help us with this, thanks

I don't know where you are going to get a lead small enough for him. You might consider getting him a stair master or a treadmill. lol. Seriously, is he/she showing any other symptoms such as flared scales (dropsy)? The fact that he/she has no lack of energy suggests that he/she is just well fed. If he/she has long trailing poop it could be a sign of constipation. Generally females have duller colors and shorter finnage. However there are more females in the market now that have brighter colors and longer finnage like the males, so it would be hard to say. It is possible that it is a female with good egg development. My best suggestion is to take him/her to your local pet shop so that they can physically look at him/her to assess male/female and weight situation. Sorry, but that's the best help I can give you.

If it is a female, and it is pregnant, there should be a little white tube (you can hardly see it on some, and on others it is obvious)between those two long, skinny fins pretty much right under their eyes. Sorry I don't know the fins name, I have yet to master that!

Hi Tuttifrutti.....I just wanted to clarify something with you. I have a betta, and it has two long skinny white tubes or looks like poop trail but white mid section of the fish on the bottom, and on both sides. Is this what you are referring to...and if it is...does that mean she is pregnant or means she is female? Mine has it.

Umm...fishybiz, could you please be a little more specific? I am not sure which part you are referring to, but if you try to name the parts, I am sure I would still be just as lost! And CatFishGuy, I have females that flare, and others that don't. I also have one male that has NEVER flared (not that I have seen, anyhow, and yes, it is a male!) I think the flaring depends on the fish!
