I figure since this is fish & aquarium, turtles Questions should be posted here. I have just been given a turtle purchased on a side walk. I believe it may be a painted or red ear slider. I don't know if i can put it in a tank with my fish that because i dont know that it will be able to reach the surface since it is smaller than my palm. Someone please help me figure out what kind it is and what enviroment to raise it in! Thanks!

i have had turtles b4.....i would not suggest for ur tank with fish. the turtle will try 2 eat them and also chase them n stress them out. an ideal enviroment for the turtle would be someplace that could be half water and half rocks/dry area and have a good heating lamp...ask your local petshop for some information on habitats tho.

Turtles need to be able to come out of the water and rest. You can buy attachements for your aquarium complete with stairs and a platform. The attachment is just sucktion cups.

Turtles also need some form of heat an ultraviolet light located over its platform is sufficient. It needs the heat ot help it digest.

As for putting it with your fish, I would caution that turtles will eat fish even though it's small it may attack your fish.

You can buy small plastic aquariums and whole turtle starting kits at most pets and Walmart for Around $15 - $25cdn depending on the size.

Painted Turtle is just a common name given to Red Ear Sliders. In the 50's and 60's baby Red Ear Sliders were sold in variety stores with designs painted on their shells. This is how the term painted turtle came about. They are very hearty. They do need an area where they can get out of the water. They thrive if they are kept warm (approximately 80 degrees). Their water should be completely changed about twice a week to keep them from developing Sal Monilla. The underneath side of the females shell is completely smooth. The underneath side of the males shell has a slight indentation running from front to back. They have the characteristic red (or yellow) stripe on each side of the head where you would imagine ears to be. They should not be kept with aquarium fish since any fish, frog, newt or salamander kept with them would be considered food. Hope this helps.
