Hi, I just inherited a 55 gallon tank and was very interested in buying a black arowana from my local fish store. BUT, I'm hearing that the fish is going to out grow that tank extremely quickly. I'd like to hear from others who have purchased this fish what their story is? How long would I be able to keep an arowana in the 55 gallon tank? AND what other fish suggests do you have to be good TANK MATES with the arowana, besides the GAR. Thanks, p.s. Please mention the size of your tanks in your response. IP: Logged |

ok well a 55 would be ok for a arowana it whole life but it would stunt its grow. 55 is the smallest but i wouldnt try it. were do u like black arowanas are really hard to find. if they have there yolk sac dont buy them. is they are small like 2 inches dont buy them 2. i have 150 for 2 baby silver. i have tankmates of 2 tinfoil barbs a bloody parrot 2 firemouthsa jewel a angel(not a good choice) a pictus cat no good 2and a pleco. others are oscars stingrays mono archerfish. just dont buy very mean fish. dont buy smallfish 2. the angel and pictus are leaving wen they get bigger. the angel can stay tho IP: Logged |

Hi TBone, The Black Arawana will have the same basic coloration as the Silver when it reaches maturity. The only difference in coloration at maturity is in the fins. The silver will have a pinkish cast while the black will have a blue tint. To me its not worth the price difference since the beautiful color they have as juvenile basically is gone once they reach about 3" to 4". Your Arawana will reach about 12" to 14" in about 8 or 9 months. Tiger Shovelnose Catfish smaller than the Arawana make good tankmates but remember they grow faster than the Arawana and reach about 4 feet in length at maturity. Another exceptional tankmate for Arawanas are Clown Knives. The Clown Knife will generally feed when the lights are off. Arawans tend to be skittish when the tank is completely darkened and hit the top of the tank. You might want to put a small 15 watt light on the tank at one end for nighttime to keep him settled down. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |
