Yes you need to get a bigger tank because the irrdescentd shark can grow up to 1 meter but I would not worry until he/she is up to 7 inches long.

Hi heman37, The general guideline I use is when the fish's length is 1/4 to 1/3 the width of the tank it is time for a move. In a 30 long the width is 36". When the fish gets 9" to 12" it's time for a move. In a 55 gallon the width is 48". When the fish gets 12" to 16" it's time for a move. Fom this you can see that if your fish is in a 30 gallon tank and is 12" long you probably want to skip right past a 55 gallon and go to something larger. Keep in mind what the mature size of the fish will be. I have found that once a fish reaches 1/3 the tank width their growth starts to stunt.

The fish can be considered to grow "quickly". I have a few that have grown about 1/4 an inch in 4 weeks. I only have about 3 inch sharkys in a 15 gallon and I am hoping I don't have to buy a new tank any time soon.
