Could I put one red tailed shark in alone in a 5 gallon tank?

Probably. But if u get any more fish i would get a bigger tank.

The answer to your question is yes and no. Red Tailed Sharks only grow about 5" long so you shouldn't have a problem with tank pollution etc. However, they like well planted tanks and are fairly active swimmers, therefore a slightly larger tank (8-10 gallons) might be appropriate for an adult. In short - it shouldn't die in a 5, but might be more interesting to watch in a slightly bigger tank.
