Hi, I haven't been to the fish forum before but I have a few questions. The one about the slime on the filters and what can I do to keep the tank slime free, what sort of filters clean excess food and poop off the gravel and how do I keep the water crystal clear? The tank is about 3 feet long and was used for Goldfish. I want to change it to tropical tank. I've purchased new gravel and air hose for the back of the tank and the petshop guy said you can't get a filter that sucks up the crap from the bottom but I've heard you can. The fishtank has a stand, hood and light. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To clean gravel you need a gravel vaccum that way you suck the water from the btm cleaning all the poop and crud. I do that about every two weeks and my water stays clean. As for the green slime I can only assume you mean algea. You can rinse that away about once a month. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't set the fishtank up yet. I bought it second hand but the algae has dried on the filters like it is stained and I've tried scrubbing it off but it doesn't work! I might just buy new ones. I will definately get a gravel vacuum though. Am I supposed to change the water often?

How many fish do you plan on putting in there? The more fish you have the more often you'll have to clean. I clean (what I mean by clean is replacing 20-25% of the water) my 55 gallon every 3-4 weeks.

I have;
3 goldfish: Oranda= body is about 5 inches (without tail), 2 Ryukin are about 2-3 inches (without tail)
1 cherry barb
1 dojo
1 common pleco
4 platties

I have 2 powerfilters and two air stones, on small "fit on the tip of the air tube" and one 12". 3 bamboo plants. And I still clean the tank every month.

Always test the water params. at least once a week to make sure you aren't poisoning your fish.

A good forum to ask about fish would be: http://pub36.ezboard.com/baquariumbbs

They could help out a TON with fish info.

Also, When you set up your tank, go out and buy a few test minnows to get your bacteria and cycling started. This takes about 3-6 weeks and it will definately help keep your fish healthy. If you don't want to use fish, buy some plants at the pet store (water plants) and some ammonia without additives. Every week pour a capful into the aquarium to feed the cycling bacteria.

Also, every week, test the water for:
Ammonia
PH
Nitrate
Nitrite

Ammonia, Nitrate, and Nitrite should be 0
Ph should be within the 6-7 range depending on what fish you get. Though, 7 is a good place to keep it.

Holy cow!! I didn't know you had to check all that stuff with ph levels and all that. Because I want a tropical tank I thought I just had to make sure the water didn't get to hot or cold and that they are gonna get enough oxygen. I plan on just getting 5-6 tropicals but I don't know what sort yet, only that they will be colourful. Any ideas on what sort of fish go well together? I will check out that website and hopefully get some more ideas. Thanks for your help.
