hey guys. i have a 10g tank right now, but for christmas i plan on getting a 55g or a 75g tank. just yesterday i bought an albino oscar which is about 4-5 inches. i want to have two oscars in my big tank when i get it. should i wait until i get the big tank to get another oscar or get another one now so that they get used to each other? and one more question. do oscars and needle fish get along? i am thinking about getting one of those instead of the other oscar for christmas. any information would be helpful about caring and stuff for the albino oscars.

thanks

You can add the other Oscar now or later. You need to get the new Oscar the same size as the one you have now. If you purchase it now your going to pushing your filtration since it's only a 10 gallon tank. You have to remember that even though your Oscar is in a 10 gallon he's going to grow faster than the ones in the overcrowded tank at the store. I'm a little unsure as to Needlefish. There are two fish that are commonly called Needlefish. One is in the Gar family, commonly called Needlefish or Needlenose Gar which would do OK with Oscars. The other fish sometimes called Needlefish is also referenced as Whiptail Cat or the Genus name Farlowella. If it is the Farlowella they are fairly demanding on water clarity which would not make them very compatible with Oscars. Also the Oscars would probably pick on him. Hope this helps.

I don't know much about the needlefish so i can't help you there, but i currently have 2 oscars about 3-5 inches and 1 jack dempsy about 2 inches in a 44 gallon hexagon, and can tell you that you should buy the 75 gallon if not bigger for christmas. I know I plan on it, a 55 gallon is just not wide enough for how big your oscars are going to get, they will get at least 12 inches, and a 55 gallon is only 12 wide, so they don't really have enough room to turn around in the 55. Also, i would recommend buying whatever your going to add now rather than later, your oscar if anything like my 2 will be really mean at first and you might worry if the other will be okay, but as long as you stick with other aggressive fish you will be okay.

How long has the tank been setup? It's possible it is going through it's cycle and the ammonia is high. As far as going to the bottom when you turn on the lights it's just the sudden shock of bright light. After a while he will probably get adjusted to your schedule and will be waiting at the top when you turn on the lights expecting to be fed. At 4" he is ready for small feeders but you might consider feeding him shrimp pellets. They are more nutritous for him and the high amount of protein will promote faster growth.
