Im just curious about the 2 dwarf frogs I have. They dont do much!... Are they going to snap out of it eventually or are they usually inactive?
...how do you tell the male from female and how large do they get?
I am also wondering about the fish in general, does it matter how long you leave the light on --does it need to be on a timer? I do have one but I rarely use it because I am university student doing a lot of papers at weird times of the night. I keep the light on well in to the wee hours of the morning so I can keep an eye on them and I enjoy watching them. Thanks everyone !

Fish need to sleep too, and tend to run on cycles dictated by light intensity (re: day and night). Most popular aquarium fish will be awake during the day and will sleep at night. Some enthusiastic aquarists even set up banks of lights on timers to simulate early morning and evening light conditions. I am not rich so I generally turn them on when I wake up, and off when I go to bed. I also recently graduated, (2001) and understand your predicament. Turning them on and off may stress them a bit. Try to give them a block of 6-8 hours/day where the lights not too intense.

Well the frogs tend not to do much, they will usually sit at the bottom of the tank and dart about unexpectedly. There is a great site that talks all about them and their problems http://members.aol.com/sirchin/common.htm#hold . I live in dorms and have a crazy schedule so I just keep my tank by the window - but i turn on the light at crazy times, hasn't seemed to bother them. My frogs like to play with each other. Make sure you cover your filter with some type of mesh - they WILL jump out. My frogs also like to jump up and eat from my fingers - this is when they are most active.
Good luck with the frogs - if you hear something strange in your room - check to see if they have tried an escape plan.

Thanks for the site, I have checked it out and it has answered a lot of my questions. Mesh is a great Idea as I was contemplating getting a peice of glass cut but found it to be very costly. I havent had any difficulties with them jumping out (maybe because its a 55-gallon tank??...Im not sure) I will get it as a precautionary measure anyhow.

my tank was a 55 and they still climbed out. they would escape in those little gaps around the heater and powerhead. I cut milk carton and taped them over these small gaps, but they still go out.
they are so cute though.. good luck!

I switch the light on for a 15 minutes when i wake up to feed them, then switch it back off,and close the curtains in the room, and turn it on when i get bvack from work, i didnt use to like it that when i'm at home the lights have to be off, so when its day for us it night for my fish and vice versa.Am i doing wrong?

I don't see any major problems with it. If the fish seem happy enough they are probably comfortably enough during the day to sleep.

Sorry but I have to laugh. Everyone seems to be saying that their frogs are really pesky and that they like to escape etc. Mine just float around and sit on the bottom etc. They arent really that active--and I have been watching them as much as I can. Maybe I just have 2 really well behaved froggies!!
I have recently bought various kinds of food for my frogs- bloodworms in a gel (highly not reccommended--messy and makes tank really cloudy) not to mention the fish loved it and didnt leave any for the frogs. I also got tubifex worms...little compressed squares of them I guess...weird.
Has anyone noticed that when you turn your light on after awahile, it takes awhile for your fishes colour to return?? I have 2 red-tailed sharks and their tails are almost transparent as soon as I turn the light on. After awhile it goes red. Is it just me or does anyone else notice this?
