Sara,
Sounds like you have a Bala shark. They like BIG tanks, really big tanks--55 to 70 gallon ones. If they feel claustraphobic they will crash and jump around making you wish you never bought him. Plus they scavenge the bottom of the tank and eat just about anything--shrimp brine to algae.
