We have 2 fancy goldfish with lovely trailing tails and two newcomers who have attacked their tails overnight. The 2 big ones can't swim straight now and their tails look very bad. Will they die? Are they in pain? The newcomers are in isolation, rotten things. IP: Logged |

I think the cause was from stress, due to the newcomers chasing the others around, nipping at them, which will also kill the fish eventually. Now that you have removed the newcomers, I'm quite sure the fins will grow back together within a good week or so depending on the damage. nevertheless you'll see a difference in that time. Hi Meghan, It depends on how badly they stress. With the care that you obviously will give them I'm confident that they will pull through. Though I have never used Melafix there are a great number of people on this board that have, and swear by it for helping to restore this type of damage. You might want to check it out. As to pain, from what I have observed in raising fish is that damage done to the soft rays of the fins there is no pain, only when the hard rays of the fin is damaged is there any pain. Since I'm not a fish and don't know the exact structure of the nerve endings I can't tell you for sure. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

I'd really like to know the size of your fish and the tank. It'd help a lot. IP: Logged |
