I have a beautiful red/multicolored beta. Have had him for a year. Over the last couple days, he has lost his energy, lies at the bottom of his bowl on his side and his breathing is very shallow. He is usually full of energy but lately it seems hard for him to swim up for air. He sometimes sits in a crocked shape and is very dispondent. Do you think salts would help? Grateful for any advice. Something that I have heard but never tried (it was too late for that betta, and now there are only 13 to entertain each other!) is puttin a mirror next to their bowl. He may be lonely, tired of showing off and stuff. Some people think it is teasing them, but they enjoy it! They are fighting fish! Hope it works! IP: Logged |

It's hard to answer your question without knowing what kind of maintenance and feeding habits you have with your fish. I don't frequent this forum and will probably forget to come check for replies but I'll tell you a few tips for Bettas: Be sure he's warm enough. Below 70 and he will be sickly. Upper 70's and he will be more active. Don't overfeed - 3-4 pellets a day is fine if you feed those, they do expand and can easily be overfed which lead to health problems and swim bladder problems which will prevent normal swimming. Be sure to clean your water at no less than 1 gallon per week (clean a 1 gallon once a week; clean a half gallon twice a week; etc) -Mermaiden IP: Logged |

um, i just clean mine once a week, or when they get dirty, i have some who don't like dirtying their bowls and will actually poop in a pile, and then others who TRY to get theirs dirty! Maybe they want to go out to sea, like in finding nemo! ha ha! IP: Logged |

My dad's poor betta has the nastiest tumors because of overfeeding. I'm afraid to touch the guy because those babies will pop any day. IP: Logged |
