i have a culligan water softener hooked up to my house water, it has a bypass that gives me the regular water with a chlorine filter , if i dont use the bypass i have softwater and no chlorine.is the softwater a bad or good choice for the tank and fish? being that softwater uses salt to soften ,what is the best way to go , thanks

Very critical! Check to see if the salt used in the system is iodized or non-iodized salt. If it is iodized salt definately do NOT use the softener. If the salt in the system is non-iodized, which I suspect to be the case, by all means use the softener. This will give you the easiest possible means to maintain your tank. If you can use the softener, do not add aquarium salt to the water. You already have the salt content necessary from the system.

could i just check the softwater salt bag to see if is iodized or not, thanks for the info, this is why i used the outside tap which is on the bypass cause i was worried about the salt situtation, was a pain in the rear going outside upstairs and down back outside etc, but i have happy fish. thanks

my parents have a culligan water softner and have no problems using it in their fishtank. in fact their fish seem to grow very quickly compared to my hard water. I would still check the salt on your end though, just in case!

Yes, it is probably listed on the bag. One of the shops I used to run used a Culligan system which worked fantastic, but Culligan has so many different systems it would be impossible for me to guess whether your system uses iodized or non iodized salt. Again, if it is non-iodized salt the system will work great as it is.
