In a group of 6 angelfish, will one always be the "leader" and pretty much pick on the other angels consistantly, or do I have a bully fish? I have one black and 5 striped. the black one is pretty out of control nasty. is this normal to cow all the rest into the plants and take over the entire 37 gal tank to himself? they are all in the 2-3 inch range.
thanks for any help

Hi Dianenm, It doesn't matter if you have 2 or 20 Angelfish, one will always be dominant. What is strange in your situation is that the Black Angelfish is the Alpha. Normally the Marble Angelfish will be dominant over the Black or Lace Angelfish. I'm also sorry to tell you that 1 of the Angelfish will probably be so dominated by the others that he will not eat. This is usually the case, although you may get lucky and this won't happen.

Hi, I kinda figured as much.. oh well.. guess I won't trade him in then ; )
I do have one that won't eat at this point. so, does that one die, and then another take it's place and won't eat and die. and so on?
I've always only kept one angel in the past so didn't encounter any of this.
they all seem ok in the morning but he gets worse and worse as the day goes on. kinda like my kids LOL
thanks for your help. I was hoping you'd answer since I know you have a lot of experience!

You have alot of hiding places? That would help out alot. If these are fairly new you could leave the lights out for a week or so that will help cut down on the stress as well. With six angels there's a good chance that two could pair off and that could bring up a lot of new problems. Do you have an extra tank in case you end up with a pair?

I have a great number of large sword plants of a couple diff variety in the tank that make wonderful hiding places. I have a 6 gal that is full of convict babies currently, but have been considering getting a 20 gal long in the future. the 55 gal is full of african cichlids.
what happens specifically if 2 pair off? other than being more territorial and potential babies? would you move the pair to their own tank?

With regard to the 6th fish, he will most likely perish. Just accept it as an act of nature. It always works that way. This is why I always recommended gettin an odd number of Angelfish. If you replace the 6th Angel the replacement fish will suffer the same fate. With the 6th Angel gone all five will continue to thrive. With regard to pairing, just leave all five in the tank. Put a piece of slate in the tank for mated pairs to lay eggs on. The female will lay the eggs and then the male will come back and fertilize them once they have been laid. Once they have been fertilized remove the slate with the eggs to an isolated 10 gallon tank. The ten gallon tank should be treated with Aquarium Salt and Methalyne Blue. Prop the slate up in the tank, going from the bottom to the side of the tank and place an airstone next to it to keep the water circulating over the eggs. If any of the eggs turn white it means that they are infertile or no good and need to be removed using either an eyedropper or pair of tweasers. The infertile eggs need to be removed promptly to keep the eggs from fungusing. This should give you a good start on breeding Angelfish.

That sounds complicated! I'm spoiled by the ease of convicts and zebras.
angelfish babies would be so cute though.
How do you know if a couple has paired off?
I bought a large marble yesterday (in the effort to get an odd number, brings it to 7 now, and also it was just really nice for the price).
It seems the black one and the marble hang out in a corner together and gang up on the striped angels. they still nip at each other some, but not very much, and one never runs from the other when doing this. they swim around together some. are they paired or just at some kind of impasse on who is the alpha?
this is all so interesting!
thanks again

It's really not complicated. I was giving you the process I used which gave me the greatest amount of success. It's not really much different than any nursery tank. It sounds like the Black and Marble Angels are pairing off. To tell which is male and which is female; The female body will arch from the mouth to the dorsal while the male will have a slight dip in his body structure above the eyes. Hope this helps.
