Should I be worried? When I bought him he did not have any black coloring. Now it is on the tips of his tail, and I think it is spreading. IP: Logged |

Do a water change and check your ammonia levels. Seems it has ammonia burn. They'll go away eventually, but you Must Do a Water Change Now. 20% change every 24 hours. Keep checking the ammonia levels until they dissapear. What is your tank size, how many fish are in the tank, and how often do you do a water change? IP: Logged |

2 gallons is WAY to small for a goldfish. You'll need to get a bigger tank and a filter. Goldfish can live a long time and get quite large if well kept. In the meantime, just to keep him alive for a little while, carry out the water changes on a regular basis. Goldfish will also change colour due to light, stress, diet and age - but your fish isn't likely to live to a ripe old age in a bowl. A "goldfish" bowl is perhaps the worst misnomer in the aquarium hobby today. IP: Logged |

the pet store worker, pardon me, is stupid. Goldfish should not, ever ever, be kept in bowls. get a 10 gallon aquarium. They normally run about 8-10 dollars.If you don't have money for a filter, buy an airstone and air pump. before you ever buy a pet, you need to read up on them rather than rely on what the pet store people tell you. I also suggest you go back to the pet store and talk to the manager and tell him what the person said. That's grounds for getting fired, giving mis-information. IP: Logged |

The worker I talked to was the owner and they could very well be stupid. I have a tank (it's not a bowl) I keep my fish in, and it has a filter, so I really need a bigger tank? IP: Logged |

how large is your fish? It needs a 10 gallon if you want a happy healthy fish. I have three orandas, one pleco, and one dojo, and they all live in a 55 gallong. even with a 55 gallon I don't feel they have enough room. But for one goldfish, a 10 gallon is suitable. Fancy goldfish (ie: ryukin, oranda etc.) grow to about 8". However, they also break the 1"/gallon rule because they are very fat bodied fish. Regular and comet goldfish are narrower bodied, but can grow well over a foot in length even in an aquarium (they'll grow even bigger in ponds) and require swimming room. A ten will be alright for now, but you'll eventually need a bigger tank. BTW, I don't entirely buy into the 1" per gallon rule as long as they have space and enough volume/filtration to deal with waste and the needs of the fish - although it's a good rule of thumb. I have 5 goldfish in my tank, and they have a habit of packing themselves together in corners or around plants. When they take off swimming though, they've got room. IP: Logged |
