I have two fancy goldfish of different type, but how do I tell which goldfish are females? IP: Logged |

it's hard to tell the sexes unless you have been breeding goldfish or have had them for a LONG time. Males have tiny white bumps on their gill plates called tubercles. These are also found on the front fins. The males fins are usually thicker than a females. The tubercles will normally only show up when a male is interested in a female or it's spawning time. Females have thinner fins, and a 'button' (the anal opening) which shows more than that of a male. A females lateral line dips lower than that of a male as well. -- This also depends on the age of your fish. If they are about a year -two years, it'll show a little more. Older fish though are easier to sex.
