I've seen so many different ages and sizes, but I was wondering which would be the most accurate. I've had my male oranda, Beefy for 3 years (I'm assuming when I got him he was about a year), so he's 4. How long do Orandas tend to live, and how big do they get? Beefy is about 4 inches long from nose to where the tail starts, the tail makes him 7 inches. Over his past two years he's gone from a small 5 gallon, to a ten gallon, toa 15, and now (hehe) a nice 55 gallon aquarium. Orandas can grow as large as 8". Common goldfish can live 20+ years. I don't know if Orandas live that long as well, but I think you can expect that it should have a fairly lengthy lifespan, assuming the absence of disease etc. If he's the only other fish, a 55 gallon should be plenty. IP: Logged |

he's sharing a tank with two younger Ryukins, a pleco, and a dojo. I've heard they can live to 40-60 years, so it's all okay ;} 20 years is just as good in my opinion. Is it the body that is 8 inches, or the body and tail combined? thanks :} IP: Logged |

I believe that's body size, not including fins. Remember that there is always a certain amount of variability from fish to fish as well and tank conditions will affect it somewhat. Your ryukins will grow about the same size, the dojo (same as weather loach I think) can grow 12", but more commonly around 7" in an aquarium. The biggest fish will be your plecostomus (up to 18" in an aquarium). You may have to get a larger tank eventually, but you should be OK for awhile. I have heard stories of Koi living 100 years, but who knows. IP: Logged |

*nods* I already knew the dojo sizes and plecos. I've had a placo before and it managed to reach the 16 inch mark. We sold it to a neighbor who had a larger aquarium ;} Thanks again IP: Logged |
