I have a pleco in my tank that is growing very quickly. When he was put in my tank about 2 months ago (by my roommate's sister in law, while I was away), he was very small... probably about 2 inches. He was the only fish in the tank then- because I was still letting the water cycle when he was unknowingly put in the tank as a present. I give him one algae wafer daily, plus I'm sure he's getting plenty of food that my other fish don't eat- a combination of cichlid pellets and flake. Now, he's easily over 6" long and still growing! I'm afraid he's getting too big for my 30 gallon tank that already has two messy young severums in it. He must be eating a lot more than I think, because he creates A LOT of manure. How much bigger will he get? What can I do with him when he's absolutely too big for my tank?

P.S. His name is George- hate to get rid of him- he's a gorgeous fish.

The size depends on what type of pleco it is but most do get very large. You could slow the growth rate by cutting out the algea waffers. I don't feed any of mine waffers and they get plenty of food from cleaning up the tank. If it gets too big you could try LFS, you might get lucky and find one that would give you a credit or just trade in for smaller pleco. Bristlenose plecos don't get very large.

Hi there. Thanks for the info. By the way, he's not a bristlenose. I don't know exactly what kind he is- just a common pleco, i think.

What is LFS?

LFS, local fish store.
I also am giving my pleco a wafer maybe once a week. there's plenty of algae, even though I also have a siamese algae eater and 4 ottos. LOL
I have an angel fish that is growing like gangbusters. when I got him his fins were all folded up and eaten away. he had spirit though.. he had herded all the other angelfish to a corner.
I did a fungal dip on him twice and he's been fantastic ever since. he's doubled in size in a bit over a month and is king of the tank now.
just sharing ; )

MY fish, including my angels all grow very slowly and never reach full size,they just stay at a med. size.I feed them a seafood and algae flake food, twice a day, and a frozen supplement once a week.My angels are in a 55 gal. and dont tell me they wont get big in there because Ive seen other peoples that have....

He will likely get too big for your 30 gallon. They do produce a lot of fecal matter, but then again they eat the equivalent of fish salad all day. Either try and get credit for him or consider him an excusae to get that bigger tank! The feces can be mitigated with regular vaccuuming.
