O.K, the last time I posted a question about my chiclids having black spots on them. I was told to do about a 30% water change. I changed the water but I don't know if it's helping. I have 3 african chiclids and I don't really know a lot about these fish. All I know is that 2 of my african chiclids are blue w/ kind of tiger or zebra like stripes and one of them is yellow with horizontal black and white stripes at the top. One of my chiclids seem to have lostm it's color. It was blue but it's not anymore, it's really pale now. My other blue fish has white film on him, what is that? It also seems like they're not eating. Does anyone know what might be wrong? IP: Logged |

The white film sounds like a fungus called Velvet. It is a bacterial infection which would require antibiotics. Also you need to make sure that the gravel in the aquarium is cleaned of waste and debris to eliminate the cause. With regard to antibiotics I would suggest Erythromycin as opposed to Tetracycline. Maracyn is composed of Erytromycin. Even though Tetracycline is stronger on treating this type of fungus it can become toxic in the tank very quickly. IP: Logged |

I would also suggest changing your filter and carbon if it's been more than a month and you're having fungus/bacterial problems. I'm sorry you're having fish problems : ( IP: Logged |

Today when I changed the water and vaccumed they seemed a lot better, they're swimming around a lot and seem happier. I also put maracyn to treat the fungus. Thanks a lot you guys. IP: Logged |

I've seen people spell the word cichlid all kinds of ways on the site. chiclid is actually a lot close than some of the spellings I've seen here, like cyclid. or siclet. I mean, come on, who cares! IP: Logged |

I agree dianenm. People don't need to be discouraged from asking questions or requesting help. IP: Logged |

I've been in the hobby for about 34 years and I still misspell cichlid half the time as well as other fish names. IP: Logged |

No, the one that had the white film died.He definetly had ick and I obviously treated him for it too late. The other two are just fine. The one that got the black spots still has the black spots and has had them for months now. I still don't know why he has them though but he's a very healthy and active fish! IP: Logged |
