I am new at the whole piranha thing, I recently purchased a 60 gal tank and all the assesories and I also purchased a red bellied piranha, I only bought one because thats all the pet store had. I've had him for about a month now and he is approx. 2" in length. If I add another two or three rbp's would that be a good Idea or not??? And also I was wondering if a algea eater would live with them as well?

Never kept rbp before but if I'm not mistaken they are like several species of cichlids that I've kept over the years. One is fine or if you want to go more you need about six or so. If you have two or three the stronger might pick on the weaker. I could be wrong but even if I'm right there's always an exception to the rule. And yes a pleco would do well with them.

A plecostomus(pleco) is a fairly hardy and well protected catfish that is fantastic at cleaning algae. A common pleco would probably be what you want, although they grow very big and will wreck any live plants you might have. Another fairly common aquarium species is the bristlenose plecostomus, although I don't know if they would fare as well. Good luck!

yea, i did this exact same thing b4, n now have 6 rbp that are bout 6" each. add them while they are younger n not as aggresive.

also, something 2 try 2 remember:if u are introducing more of an aggresive fish 2 a tank, make sure that the total number of that species is odd, so that each of these fish fear of getting attacked by a larger group, hence making them not as aggresive towards eachother. much the same way as a human. would u go pick a fight (by urself) with a person who has 3 other people with him that could jump in the fight also whenever they please?

thats cool amn so I guess I should go ahead and do it than. I'll probuly get two more than. How much do you pay for your rbp? I pay $15.99 for one.
Something else I was woundering about, when I use the gravel syphon it takes out a bit of water i was woundering if it is ok to just add tap water to the tank or should I have a supply of tap water put aside so all the chlorine is out of it..
And one more thing, why is'nt my rbp all red along the belly? is it normal?

Use dechlorinator "tap water conditioner"
The only reason u should have to let the water sit is if the ph coming out of your tap is a lot different from your tank ph then u would want to set some out over night and put an air stone in it. Just make sur u use the de-chlor.

BTW make sure your tank is fully cycled before u add more fish so you don't overload it and cause illnes due to poor water quality. How long has it been up with fish in it? Have you checked the parameters? This is the most common and worst mistake made when starting a new tank.

You can get an pleco and it will last for another month or so but they will eventually eat it. this happend to me and my friend and will happen to you if you get a pleco, but there are snails and other kinds of algea eaters that will survive that you can get. i had 2 piranhas for about 5 months and then i decided to get more, so i got some 1 inch ones that were about 2 inches smaller than my other ones and they are doing well, but you should change the arrangement of your tank so they can all get new taritories, and make sure to give some hidding space for your new piranhas.Oh ya, and it is always best to stick with an even number of piranhas, you would have to be crazy to get and odd number. And nothing against cichlids, but piranhas are totaly different in most all areas, and are better at that. When you are adding new water to the tank you can just use tap water and cycleing is good to do but i didnt find it nessisary. but when you put new water in from the tap, you should put some water conditioner in, forsure. any more questions you can email me at dgfroese@hotmail.com

My LFS has a large piranha tank with 2 plecos in it, and they're fine. They're quite large though 10-12".
