Does anyone know how much a 125 tank with real oak wood stand would weigh with all water and pumps. I have a 125 year old house,, not sure my foundation can hold the weight. I hae an outdoor pound around 250 gallon with 12-18 fancy goldfishes the size of a tennis ball. Its getting close to winter in chicago so i must bring them in. I am looking at 125 gallon tank, any suggestions on filters.. just need something with easy maitance and cheap.. cause they will be back in pond in april. and and price estimates on total cost of tank and stand?? Looking to get tank and stand at petsmart.. is that a good idea??

corret me if im mistaken, but i thoguht that goldfish could live outside in the pond as long as there is water movement (waterfall or a sprinkler head stinknig out of the middle thingy)so that the pond wont freeze up.

I think you might want to be careful on that. I don't know if GF can survive in freezing water or not, but a sudden change can prove fatal even short of actually hitting zero (celsius). The problem that my parents had in the fall with their pond was they got a early snowstorm and filled the pond with snow. About half the fish went into shock and ended up dying. Granted, this is in Canada.

An update to my previous post:

Certain varieties can handle the cold temps. Common goldfish and shubunkin (it doesn't say but I would guess Koi would be in this category too) can handle temperatures as low as 32-33 F. Others, such as comets, moors, lionheads etc. bottom out at about 46 F. Still, sudden changes need to be avoided. Also, the weight of the tank itself depends on glass thickness, etc. but the majority of the weight is the water at 1 kg/litre (2.2lbs). 125 gallons is about 473 litres or 1041 lbs.

I moved away from Chicago about a year ago and, while I miss it with a passion, I remember how unpredicatable the weather could be esp. during winter! I loved the winter with snow (occasionally), the frost, and the wind chill (yikes!). Unfortantely I don't think your fish might appericate the weather so much. Although i don't know how much your floor can hold, if that is too much try for a couple smaller tanks around the house. It may cost a little more but not as much as a new floor!

With regard to the weight of 125 gallon, it will weigh approximately 1lb per square inch. Probably not much different than a big screen TV or a fully stocked refrigerator. Hope that helps. With regards to freezing Goldfish, for what it's worth, I have two ponds in my backyard, 125 gallon and 200 gallon. Believe it or not we do occasionally get snow in Texas. I've had both ponds freeze to about 3/16" with no loss of Koi or Comets. Also there are no heaters in the ponds. There were no waterfalls or sprinklers running. There is one factor that may affect this result. Both ponds are stocked with Parrots Feather a high oxygen producing plant. The ponds were frozen over about 24 hours, which is attributable to Texas weather, 25 degrees one day and 75 degrees the next day. The Goldfish will get below the freeze line. I took no steps to thaw the pond considering that it was best on the fish to allow it to thaw the way it would in nature.
