i wanted to know a few answers before i get some oscars. i have a 10 gallon aquarium and was wondering if i could get two small oscars (1"-2") and put them in to tne 10 gallon tank. i would upgrade the tank to a 20 gallon long fish tank in december or january when i get a new tank for one of my turtles. i would get a tiger oscar and a albino tiger oscar. will they fight? what do i feed them? how many inches of gravel at the bottom shold there be? how can i determine the sex? how often do i feed them?

a 10 gallen tank is way to small for 2 oscers it would be cruel to put them in that size tank also it would stunt there groth bcaz they grow very fast. i would think that the two oscers wouldnt fight and you can feed them feeder fish or pellets if i were you i wouldnt get the oscers unless i had a biger tank but thats just me hope this helped ? two oscars need at least a 55gallon tank, heater and a good filter. i have about an inch of gravel on the bottom of my tank. two different coloured oscars wont fight, and you can only tell the sex if they are breeding. they can grow up to 12 inches and will live for about 15 years so be careful about picking this fish. two 2inch oscars should be fine in a 10 gallon tank until they get to about 3-4 inches. then start figuring out where to get a bigger tank. and no, they wont cost you 400bucks for tank supplies but with a new big tank , probably about 100-150 with the oscars/food/tank/heater/filter/rocks/and love and care. "two oscars need at least a 55gallon tank" Actually, 55 is really the bare minimum for one oscar. In order to keep 2 oscars in a 55 gallon tank, you will most likely have to do water changes at least twice a week, have massive amounts of filtration, and have two oscars that get along REALLY well. Plus, many will argue that a 55 isn't even big enough for one oscar because it's only 12 inches wide and a full grown oscar can get 14 - 16 inches long (not including the tail). It is recommended to have AT LEAST 75 gallons for 2 oscars and even that doesn't always work because of aggression. "two different coloured oscars wont fight" I don't know where you heard that, but it is COMPLETELY false. If two oscars don't like eachother, they will fight no matter what color they are. "they can grow up to 12 inches" Try more like 14 - 16 inches (again, not including the tail). "two 2inch oscars should be fine in a 10 gallon tank until they get to about 3-4 inches" No again. ONE oscar could maybe survive in a 10 gallon until it was about 3 - 4 inches. 2 oscars could maybe stay in it until they were 3 inches. And since oscars grow 1 - 1 1/2 inches/month, they could only stay in that tank 2 months tops. Oscars are VERY messy fish and as such need more water than fish like tetras and gouramis. "and no, they wont cost you 400bucks for tank supplies but with a new big tank , probably about 100-150 with the oscars/food/tank/heater/filter/rocks/" The only way you're going to spend $100 - $150 on a PROPER set up for 2 oscars is if you got an INCREDIBLE deal on a used set up. My entire 75 gallon set up (all new) cost about $600 (tank, stand, lights, lid, decorations, heater, and filter). So for the original poster, I suggest forgetting about oscars and looking into some smaller fish like tetras or dwarf gouramis that are more suited for a 10 gallon tank. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Yes, 55 is a minimum for one Oscar. And I personally think thats too small for one once they reach adult hood in 5 or so years. But, it only takes them 12 months or so to grow 90% or so of their size. If all you can get is a 20 gallon, dont even consider oscars. Maybe a pair of cons. They are pretty cool fish. IP: Logged |
